Cellulaze is the world's first minimally invasive laser cellulite treatment to address the core structure of cellulite. It was introduced to the market after four years of intense research on a clinical study which involved 120 patients in USA. Cellulaze received the European approval in January 2011 and the FDA (American Food and Drug Administration) approval in January 2012. Cellulaze was officially launched in UK in September 2011. In July 2011, Liverpool Laser Clinic introduced the new technique to UK when Mr Hassan Shaaban performed the first Cellulaze treatment.
Cellulaze is unique in that it attacks the three different structural components of cellulite. The three components of cellulite are:
Cellulaze delivers a laser beam under the skin through two to three small incisions. It treats all components of cellulite at the same setting. It dissolves fat bulges, divides fibrous band to release skin dimples and also tightens the skin through stimulation of collagen formation. Cellulaze gives a long-lasting result after a single treatment. Follow up of early cases of Cellulaze in USA shows no recurrence of cellulite after three years of treatment.
The Cellulaze laser is unique in that it produces a combination of different laser wavelengths. One particular wave length (Nd-YAG 1064nm) targets blood vessels under the skin, reducing bleeding and resulting in less post-op bruising, pain and swelling.
Mr Shaaban explains: “In my opinion, the main structural abnormality of cellulite lies in the unexplained shortening of the fibrous septae between the skin and deeper muscles, as well as the laxity of the skin. None of the existing treatments have been able to address these problems adequately and, as a result, as plastic surgeons, we have been unable to produce satisfactory results.”
Cellulaze is different from any currently available cellulite treatment. Creams and lotions have minimal effect on cellulite. Very few may stimulate the skin to produce collagen but they have no effect on fat bulges or skin dimples. Also, they have to be used daily and for a long time to get any result. External cellulite therapy like ultrasound, radiofrequency, external laser and Endermologie has limited success as most of these techniques stimulate the skin to produce collagen, some can dissolve some fat but none has any effect on the fibrous bands (skin dimples). They also need to be applied frequently (may be weekly) to maintain any effect.
The Cellulaze workstation has two unique safety devices (ThermaGuide and SmartSense) to ensure maximum clinical safety. The ThermaGuide measures the temperature under the skin, which allows the surgeon to maintain the temperature at the optimum level required to produce skin tightening, whilst at the same time reducing the risk of excessive heating and burns.
The Smart-Sense is a motion sensing device which controls the amount of energy delivered, according to how fast the probe is moved by the surgeon. This produces the most even heating of the skin and reduces the risk of delivering excessive energy in one spot, which can result in tissue necrosis.
Mr Shaaban presented the results of his first 12 cases of Cellulaze at the recent meeting of the British Association of Aesthetic and Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS 2012). All patients were female aged between 23yrs and 56yrs. All cases were performed as walk-in walk-out procedure under local anaesthesia. Six patients had Cellulaze treatment combined with Laser Assisted Liposuction (LAL). Four patients had multiple stages treatment (each stage is the size of A4 paper sheet). All patients showed much improvement in the appearance of their cellulite with a high patient satisfaction rate.
Up to date, Cellulaze proved to be an effective safe technique to treat the dread orange-peel appearance of cellulite. It needs a single minimally invasive treatment but shows immediate results which continues to improve with time.

If you suffer from cellulite, then help is on the way! Cellulite is caused by fat deposits that develop in the skin’s fibrous tissues, creating a dimpled effect on the upper thighs and buttocks, as well as the arms and abdomen. More than 80 percent of adult women in the United Kingdom are afflicted with cellulite.
Cellulite and weight gain are not necessarily related, because even supermodels like Kate Moss suffer from it. Cellulite creams, compression garments and vacuum treatments have all been said to be effective treatments, but in reality they rarely work.
Surgery to remove cellulite usually leaves scarring and an unsatisfactory result. However, in September of 2011, doctors in the United Kingdom unveiled a revolutionary laser procedure that promises to quickly and effectively remove cellulite for good.
Cellulaze, requiring only one doctor’s visit, is being called a cure for cellulite by some medical professionals. Approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in January, 2012, the Cellulaze laser technology promises to deal with the 3 main causes of cellulite: bulging fat, too-thin skin, and connective tissue that doesn’t stay smooth, resulting in ugly dimples.
Many cosmetic surgeons in the United States are excited about Cellulaze as a permanent solution to cellulite. A growing number of doctors have undergone the necessary training and are now able to charge patients from $2,500 to $5,000 for Cellulaze treatments.
Unlike other treatments, Cellulaze works by directly attacking the internal body tissues that cause cellulite. The procedure takes about ninety minutes under local anesthetic, and requires only tiny incisions with minimal post-operative scarring. The area to be treated is first sterilized with an iodine solution and then a local anesthetic is administered.
A laser on the end of a fine metal tube, called a cannula, is then inserted into the fatty areas below the skin through very small incisions. The laser gives off heat to dissolve the fat and remove cellulite bulges. Then the laser heats the skin in order to stimulate the gradual formation of collagen during the next six months.
Check out this Cellulaze video:
Cellulite occurs when underlying tissue bands stiffen and the fat cells they surround enlarge, pushing up against the skin and creating that “cottage cheese” effect. If you have thin skin resulting from aging, cellulite is even easier to see.
The Cellulaze procedure modifies this structure, reducing the appearance of cellulite in a single treatment. During the procedure, a tiny laser fiber is inserted under the skin which gently heats the skin and breaks up or melts the fat.
Next, the laser releases the fiber strands that pull down on the skin and create that dimpling or “cottage cheese” effect. Releasing the strands creates a smoother look.
Finally, the energy of the laser stimulates the production of collagen. This helps increase your skin’s elasticity, resulting in a healthier and smoother appearance.
Only one treatment is necessary to give what doctors believe will be permanent removal of cellulite. A follow-up study of more than one hundred Cellulaze patients in the United States showed no deterioration in results a year after their Cellulaze treatment.
Like any kind of cosmetic surgery, removal of cellulite by laser isn’t for everyone. Women with skin conditions like eczema or psoriasis should avoid laser treatments until their skin problems have been resolved in order to avoid making them worse.
After the treatment, the dimples are gone or greatly diminished, and 90 days after the procedure the texture of the thighs is taut and smooth. For many patients, shorts can now be worn without embarrassment.
Cellulite is subject to a sliding scale in terms of severity, and Cellulaze cannot completely eliminate it. Depending on her grade of cellulite, a woman should hope for a reduction of between two and three grades.
The cellulite grading system most often used is the Nurenberg scale, named after the German doctor who created it. Grade one cellulite means that the cellulite is not obvious to the naked eye, but when the thighs are pinched, they will become dimpled in appearance.
Grade two cellulite refers to cellulite that is somewhat visible to the casual observer, and grade three cellulite is that which is highly visible. Grades two and three each have three subcategories – mild, moderate and severe – which makes a total of seven levels of cellulite.
The initial reviews of this laser cellulite remover have been overwhelmingly positive. Women who went into the surgery skeptical have come out singing its praises. The backs of their thighs are now smooth and there is hardly any cellulite visible.
The $2,500 cost for Cellulaze appears to be worth it to women who have spent thousands already on other cellulite treatments that don’t work like creams, vacuum treatments and compression garments. They can now show off their cellulite-free legs and don’t feel self-conscious about wearing shorts and skirts any longer. Why not give laser cellulite treatment a try?
