How to tone cellulite

How to Tone your Legs and Get Rid of Cellulite? | What is Cellulite?

Today’s fast changing lifestyles and lack of time have spurred dependence on junk foods. High stress combined with irregular eating habits and unhealthy diets have lead to rise in obesity levels worldwide. There is also the influence of ads and movies to contend with! The entertainment industry has a vast influence on our day-to-day lives and always pressures us to look as skinny as the model or the heroine in our favorite movie or ad. The pressure to look thin is mounting on both-men and women.

But while men may find it easy to exercise off those extra kilos by gymming for an hour or two more, this is not true in the case of women because of their  hormones. The most important female hormone, estrogen, plays a key  role in the formation of fat or cellulite. As much as  90 percent of women have cellulite, most of it concentrated on the thighs, hips and upper arms. So, how to tone your legs and get rid of cellulite? Read on to get the answer to this very important question…

What is Cellulite?

In simple terms, cellulite means persistent subcutaneous fat which causes dimples in the skin. It is usually found on hips and  thighs of  women. It is believed that the deposition of fat could be driven by genetics, as well.

Cellulite is normally formed when the flow of blood slows down, resulting in the separation of collagen. What this does is, create an orange peel effect with the fat coming up to the surface of the skin, causing unsightly bulges.

Apart from hormonal reasons, cellulite can appear due to poor diet and lifestyle choices, as well as ageing and genetic predisposition. All the above mentioned factors share a commonality- the accumulation of toxins in the body.

Today, we live on packaged foods, have a considerable amount of refined sugars and salts, processed starches, chemicals, pesticides and preservatives which contribute to high toxicity levels in our bodies. Adding to these, are the environmental chemicals as well as pollutants inside the house, and outside which affect our body. Considering all of these, it seems impossible to get rid of the embarrassing dimples on our hips and thighs. But it’s not as hard as it seems! The truth is that a few lifestyle changes can help one lose that extra flab from around the waist, hip and thighs; and tone the body.

Following the regime given below will help you to get rid unsightly cellulite permanently and stop your mind from constantly thinking about how to tone your legs to get rid of cellulite?

1. Simple dietary changes:

Introducing an alkaline and unprocessed diet will help one to remove toxins from the body. All one has to do is include fresh fruits and vegetables in the diet. Fresh fruits and vegetables help in reducing cellulite. The alkalinity of the fruits and vegetables magnetizes the acidic toxic matter in the cells and removes them from the body. Consuming high fiber and whole grain foods also help remove waste and toxins from the intestinal tract and prevent the creation of cellulite. It also cuts down the excess flab in the body. One should never forget to include a vitamin C rich food, as it helps in building immunity. Vitamin C rich foods also help in boosting the levels of collagen in the skin which enhances the elasticity and keeps the skin firm.

Drinking enough water – around two to three litres daily, is also highly recommended, as we are aware that 70 to 75% of human body consists of water. Water is therefore, essential to life and it also helps in reducing and preventing further cellulite formation.

Switching from refined salt to Celtic sea salt or Himalayan crystal salt helps prevent the accumulation of toxins in the body. Refined salt is extremely acidic and removes the essential minerals from the body which results in dehydration and increase in cellulite deposition. On the other hand, crystal and sea salts are alkaline and full of beneficial minerals which help prevent cellulite.

2. Exercising your way out of cellulite:

Activities like walking, running, cycling, jogging and swimming thrice a week, help in toning the body and reducing cellulite. Cardio exercises specially target the buttocks, hips and thigh areas and have proven to be excellent for how to tone your legs and get rid of cellulite.

I). Exercises for  buttocks, hips and  thighs:

a. Lay straight on your stomach. Slowly raise your legs from just above your knees. The feet should be in the air, few inches away from the floor. Then bend the knees in the air without any support and hold the position for a minimum of 15 seconds. Later, slowly unbend your knees and then straighten the legs touching the floor.

b. Stand straight and hold on to a rod or the back of a chair. Looking straight, move the right leg behind with the toe touching the floor, then slowly raise the same leg at an angle for around 10 inches above the floor and hold for a minimum of five seconds. Then release the leg and bring it back to the same position in a similar manner by slowly touching the toe to the floor. Repeat the same on the left side in a similar manner.

c. Squats:

Stand straight without taking any support with both the feet together. Keeping your hands straight, slowly slide the body until you are in a sitting position (thighs should at 90 degree to the surface). Stay in the same position for upto  two minutes. Slowly get back to a standing position. Repeat the exercise five times.

II). Toning your legs for the perfect shape:

a. Calf raises:

This is a simple exercise for how to tone your legs nicely. All you  have to do is stand straight without locking the legs. Then slowly move onto the toes by lifting the heels off the floor. Stay in this position for three seconds and then slowly lower the heels back down. Keep repeating the exercise as many times as you can.

b. Lunges:

These help strengthen the legs. You need to stand with the right leg stretching in the forward direction and left leg stretching backwards. Slowly bend both the knees. You must take care to keep the back straight and your weight evenly balanced on both heels. Go back to the original position.

3. Wearing clothes that let our bodies breathe:

All of us love wearing figure hugging clothes which make us look attractive and boost our  confidence. But, we must not forget that good blood circulation is essential for each and every part of the body. Tight clothes work against good circulation and hence, help in cellulite deposition. Remember, if your inner clothing is leaving deep marks on your skin, it means that the blood flow to those areas is being hampered. In order to avoid cellulite deposition, it’s a good idea to wear loose fitting clothes.

4. Dry Massaging Skin:

Massage helps our mind and body relax and also helps in reducing cellulite. Massaging the skin helps in breaking down of fat cells and an increase in blood circulation to the cells. A simple 10 minute dry brush massage, just before a shower, is a good technique for how to tone your legs and get rid of cellulite. All you require is a shower brush with circular soft bristles.

You just have to dry brush your cellulite affected areas for about 10 minutes, three or four times a week. Stimulating the lymph glands which are just below the surface of the skin with massage or dry brushing, helps toxins to be circulated into the elimination channels for release.

The right way to dry brush is to brush across the cellulite deposit areas just before a shower when the skin is completely dry with no moisture or oil. This will help increase blood circulation and tone the muscles.

Using coffee as home remedy for cellulite:

If one has enough time and wants better results, he or she can go beyond just dry brushing and use coffee grounds/pods for scrubbing areas with cellulite . Many studies have revealed that coffee, which has caffeine, helps in reducing the swelling caused in the fat cells. Massaging with coffee helps the skin appear smooth. All one has to do, is to roast a few  coffee grounds/pods and then put them in a cloth or plastic wrap and wrap it around the cellulite area. One can also simply massage with roasted coffee grounds for 10 minutes.

Now that we know that the main cause of cellulite formation is impaired blood circulation and increased levels of in toxins in the body, we can take some very practical steps to fix those unsightly orange peels on our skin. All one has to do is increase activity levels, avoid getting overweight and remain stress-free. Plus to make things even better, one can stick to healthy diets, with intake of fruits and vegetables to bid goodbye to cellulite forever!
