Cellulite is classified by grades. There are three different grades of cellulite:

  • Grade 1  – This is the simplest grade of cellulite. It is in the body, but there are no clinical or physical symptoms. The underlying anatomical change can only be detected by a microscopic cell examination in the area of the cellulite.
  • Grade 2 – Cellulite of this grade begins to show physical signs in the affected area. Pastiness of the skin, decreased elasticity and lower temperature than other areas of the skin combined with the anatomical changes seen in Grade 1 cellulite are all symptoms of cellulite at a Grade 2 level.
  • Grade 3 – This grade of cellulite will have all the signs of Grade 1 and Grade 2, with the addition of the skin beginning to have a visible roughness, not unlike the peel of an orange.

One of the most common and obvious questions about cellulite is, “Where does it come from?” There are many different determinants that can cause cellulite. While some are avoidable, the most common causes come from our genetic makeups, and therefore are going to happen to us no matter how well we take care of our bodies.  Some common causes of cellulite include:

  • Genetics — Like many conditions in the human body, some of us are pre-disposed to cellulite.  Some genetic factors that play a role in the generation of cellulite include race, gender, the distribution of fat directly underneath the skin, slow metabolism and/or circulatory problems.
  • Diet — A high-fat, high-salt, low-fiber diet can also contribute to the condition. Cellulite has been attributed to diets with too many carbohydrates, as well as low-fiber, high-fat and high-salt content diets.
  • Hormones — It is very likely that hormones play a large part in the development of cellulite.  It is widely believed that hormones such as insulin, estrogen, prolactin, thyroid hormones and noradrenaline all play a part in the process of producing cellulite.
  • Clothing — Articles of clothing with elastic waistbands (such as sweatpants and underwear) can contribute to the onset of cellulite. The elastic bands limit blood flow, which can also cause the formation of cellulite.
  • Lifestyle — As in any condition, there are certain lifestyle factors that will increase your chance of forming cellulite.  Smokers, those who sit or stand in one place for extended periods of time, and those who do not exercise are at greater risk of cellulite formation than others.

While there is no scientifically proven method known for the removal of cellulite, there are several therapies that have been tested. They range from heat therapy and ultrasound to electrical stimulation and magnetic therapy. These methods and more have been suggested to remove cellulite, but unfortunately none have been scientifically proven to do so.
