Cellulite be GONE!

Ever notice how even your fittest friends still have some cellulite?

Do you ever wonder how in the heck that is possible?

Well, it is because it is not all about how much you work out or even what you eat; obviously having extra weight on your body is going to impact the amount and appearance but losing fat alone will not get rid of your cellulite.

So, what is the main culprit behind cellulite?

 The lumpy, clumpy, cottage-cheese textured appearance on your thighs is primarily due to dehydrated connective tissue (the collagen-based tissue that supports everything from your skin to your bones and everything in between).

In between your skin and muscles, there’s a layer of connective tissue. Think of it like a sponge around your muscles. If the sponge is hydrated, it stays supple and juicy and moves well with changes in your body. However, if it becomes dehydrated, the fat cells in your body can expand and multiply. When this happens, your fat cells start to put pressure on your connective tissue and bulge through the openings rather than force the tissue to stretch and flex. This damages the collagen fibers in your thighs and stretches them out like an old pair of pants that have lost their shape and never quite fit right again, creating the appearance of cellulite on your skin. That’s why, even when you lose weight and work to reduce body fat, you can still see cellulite—the collagen-based tissue is still damaged. Losing weight can certainly help, but the real way to reduce the appearance of cellulite is to get to the root of the problem and rehydrate the tissue.

Sitting all day chronically compresses the backs of your legs so simply standing up for five minutes every hour can help keep the connective tissue hydrated and your lymphatic system flowing so that toxins and internal debris don’t accumulate.

Here are some of my other great Daily Tips to start doing now!

  1. Dry Brush – use a gentle dry brush that you can purchase from any natural health store beauty section. Each day before you shower, use long sweeping stories or circular motions from your extremities back towards your horse and up towards your heart. For stubborn cellulite spend some extra time in those areas. Consistency  is key!
  2. Ditch your EXPENSIVE anti-cellulite cream and choose natural Carrier Oils such as Coconut oil, Almond oil, Jojoba oil, Apricot Kernal oil, Shea Butter and Sesame oil and use these Essential Oils: Juniper, Fennel, Grapefruit, Lemon, Rosemary, Sage and Cypress are known as the best oils for increasing circulation to areas plagued with cellulite.
  3. Hydrate – Aim to drink 2-4 litres daily to help flush toxins and stimulate proper flow of nutrients throughout your body. Try adding fresh lemon juice, organic frozen berries, cucumber slices or fresh herbs. Do NOT add any products that are advertised as sugar-free, diet or light/lite, they are full of artificial sweeteners and chemicals that are GIVING YOU CELLULITE!
  4. Move – Exercise, especially as a female, is a MUST for smooth, cellulite-free skin. Strength Training, Pilates and Yoga triumph cardio any day of the week when it comes to adding more élan muscle tissue to your body and decreasing your body fat. These 3 forms of exercise also help to manage your hormones (read more below under hormones).
  5. Cut the CRAP! Sugar, artificial sweeteners, chemicals, sodium, trans fats and any white, processed garbage. All of these are clogging your arteries, elevating your blood sugar, decreasing your energy, affecting your sleep, giving you headaches, joint pain, inflammation and jamming your fat cells full of cellulite forming garbage that is chronically pressing against your connective tissue and squeezing through as a cottage cheese appearance. STOP SQUEEZING THE BACK OF YOUR THIGHS and instead squeeze out the garbage from your fridge, cupboards and grocery cart.
  6. Manage Your Hormones – This one is huge! If your cortisol is out of whack, your pancreas under stress and blood sugar out of balance, plus elevated estrogen levels and decreased progesterone you will be more prone to have cravings, store fat and hold onto this unhealthy fat in your abdomen and thighs.   7. Manually Break Up Your Cellulite – Use incredible tools like these:       Foam Rollers – my FAVOURITE tool for breaking up the deep fascial adhesions that build up in our bodies and when combined with cellulite forming beneath the skin, pushing through to the top can result in cellulite areas that are also quite painful when pressure is applied to them. The foam roller helps to break up this network and create a more supple, smoother looking body. I recommend doing this 4-6 weekly along with the other 6 tips above. There are some great youtube videos on foam rolling techniques you can download.

Cellulite….BE GONE!

Cottage cheese, hail damage, orange peel, whatever you want to call it, the majority of women have cellulite of some degree.

Cellulite is a layer of fat under your skin that is pushing up through connective tissue. It is more noticeable in women because our skin is thinner than males. It can be made appear worse by varying factors such as hormones, excess body fat, genetic factors, body composition, low metabolism and your lifestyle.

Whilst we all may want to get rid of it completely we need to remember that it is perfectly normal to have some cellulite and that its healthy to have some body fat. It’s easy to be so critical of our appearance all the time and while its ok to want to improve our appearance we should learn to love ourselves and not constantly try to be perfect. Lets concentrate on being fit and healthy and the physical pay offs will come anyway.

There are some things you can do however to reduce the appearance of cellulite (and improve your health)

Reduce body fat. This is may not be the case for everyone but if you do have excess body fat, reducing the amount will certainly lessen the appearance of it. Reducing body fat to be within the healthy range will also improve your health and reduce your risk of many lifestyle diseases.

2) Increase lean muscle mass. By building muscle you will increase your metabolism and burn more fat. Incorporating resistance training/weight training 3 or more times per week will increase muscle tone and improve your connective tissue, thus reducing cellulite. I can speak from my own experience here, that weight training has made a significant difference to my cellulite. I still have it, but its only noticeable when I squeeze my glutes together. 3) Balance your hormones. Living a healthy lifestyle and following a healthy diet full of clean whole foods may help balance your hormones. Although estrogen has copped the blame for cellulite in the past, the claims have not been scientifically proven. Other hormones including insulin, adrenaline, thyroid hormones and prolactin are all believed to participate in the development of cellulite. So ensure you try to reduce your stress levels and sugar intake and get adequate sleep every night, it will go a long way to not only improve your cellulite but your health as well.

4) Drink more water. Our body is made up of up to 70% water and we need water to perform just about every function in the human body. We also can’t metabolise fat if we are dehydrated. If we are dehydrated it can impair the function of our kidneys. If the kidneys aren’t doing their job properly it will call on the liver to help do its job. Since the liver is responsible for metabolising fats, this job gets put on hold while the liver works over time to help the kidneys. So if you are wanting to burn some stored fat, ensure you are drinking the required 1.5 – 2 litres a day, more if exercising and in the warmer months.

5) Need an instant result? Fake tan! Cellulite is far less noticeable on tanned skin than skins of a lighter shade. Fake tans have come a long way and you can find some really nice, natural looking tans on the market. Be sure to check the ingredients for any nasty chemicals before you make your purchase.



Friends! In reference to my post last week, January 2018 is all about LOVING ourselves and prioritizing health & wellness as we step into this new year! So today, we are going to dive into one of the most FRUSTRATING yet simultaneously ultra common issues for women: CELLULITE. Ugh… WHAT?!?

Truth be told, I never realized cellulite was a “thing” for allll women until I turned 25. Before that age, everything kind of just stayed in place. But alas, add a crazy stressful career schedule, changing hormones, an aging body and ZING there comes the lovely cottage cheese. It started in my behind first [which is pretty common!], then it went to the upper back of my legs. Sigh. I didn’t truly make notice of it as offensive though, until it started appearing on my front thighs. Gasp. It was as though the front of my legs were starting to sag, and it was all because of this lovely thing called cellulite. OH JOY!

I will be honest with you all that I was not in the best place in terms of knowing LOVE for myself when my cellulite starting suddenly appearing. My thoughts downward spiraled as I looked at girls older than me and start comparing. Thoughts of “I AM YOUNG! Why is this happening to me?!” filling my head as I started thinking it just wasn’t fair. I quite honestly began getting pretty embarrassed about the amount of cellulite that I found on my body… so much so that I started to refuse to wear anything that wasn’t to my knees. Shorts in the summertime were completely “ex-nayed”, because they showed far too much upper thigh life.

PS. Quick side note. ALL of these bathing suit photos are fully untouched*, meaning absolutely zero retouching to my body AT ALL after my Endermologie treatments. HEYYO! 

The first and most obvious issue with this way of thinking was that I needed to see myself as BEAUTIFUL, cellulite and all. Oh how we hate cellulite!

Those ugly deposits of fat that most of us see on our bodies at some point or another (even if you’re skinny.)

What is Cellulite?

The term “Cellulite” is used to describe a cosmetic imperfection that causes distress to millions of women.  On the surface, cellulite is lumpy, bumpy, rippled skin that first appears, most commonly, on the thighs and buttocks.  Cellulite is more commonly found in women and is indiscriminate of size, shape or weight.

 What causes cellulite?

The storage of fat in the adipocytes (fat cells in the dermis) as well as water in the dermis and hypodermis contribute to the visibility of cellulite.  As the adipocytes increases in size, their membranes become distorted and place strain on their points of fixation within the skin resulting in the unsightly lumpy appearance (orange peel effect).  This process is then aggravated by a slowing down of circulation resulting in the stagnation of toxin and the reduction of nutrients within the structures.  Congestion of the connective tissue also occurs which results in the loss of elasticity.

I know what you’re thinking, is there a fast way to get rid of cellulite for good?

 The answer is yes!
  • Help your skin detoxify itself with dry-skin brushing, using a body brush with natural bristles. Brush strokes start at your feet, moving up your legs in long, brisk movements in the direction towards your heart to encourage the return of blood and lymphatic flow. This should take two to five minutes a day.
  • Enjoy slimming bath salts that are energized with laminaria and fucus seaweed in your tub at home. It is recommended to use them twice a week.
  • Load up on all of those veggies and fruits. They are known to keep cellulite at bay.
  • Other miracle ingredients to include in your daily diet are: ginger, fennel, onion, cayenne pepper, rosemary, cinnamon, cloves and lemons.
  • Drink at least six to eight glasses of water. This will help to flush out all the excess toxins from your body that could otherwise end up on your thighs and butt.
  • Exercise: walking, yoga, weight lifting or anything that sets your gluteal muscles and leg muscles in motion.
