Step One ~ Eat RightDiet is a four letter word, so let's not use it. Nevertheless, the first step in how to prevent cellulite is to follow a healthy meal plan. Fill your plate with good, tasty, wholesome and nutritious natural foods. Eat lots of leafy green vegetables, colorful citrus fruit and berries, melons, lean meat & vegetable protein, whole grains; and use olive oil instead of margarine or corn oil for cooking.. Eat three medium size meals and three small snacks throughout the day to avoid feeling hungry or deprived.
Step Two ~ Drink Plenty of WaterVirtually every medical practitioner, nutritionist and homeopathic practicioner will tell you it is of paramount importance to consume plenty of fresh, clean and pure water every day. The good thing about these claims is that they are falsifiable. It’s common to think that science advances when scientists are able to prove a certain theory is true. But “proving” a theory true is rare. As theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking explains, “No matter how many times the results of experiments agree with some theory, you can never be sure that the next time the result will not contradict the theory.” Even a large body of evidence can equally support conflicting theories.
But a theory can be disproved if a single piece of evidence is incompatible with it. As a result, scientific progress is more likely to occur when a theory is proven false, not when it is proven true. This is why analysts are trained to look for disconfirming evidence when evaluating a hypothesis.
Before I started The Cellulite Investigation, I assumed the experts like Dr. Oz were right about cellulite. Maybe I could improve its appearance temporarily with a certain cream or spa treatment, but real healing probably wasn’t possible unless I worked off every spare ounce of fat from my body. This didn’t seem likely since I was already thin (did you know thin women often have the worst cellulite?).
That’s when I discovered dry skin brushing. Dry skin brushing is the simple act of brushing the body with a stiff, natural-bristle brush in the direction of lymphatic flow. It is supposed to increase lymphatic circulation by stimulating superficial lymph vessels, the ones located just under the skin. About seventy percent of lymph vessels are superficial, so the idea seemed plausible. And since dry brushing is cheap and painless, I decided to give it a try.
I started dry brushing in the thick of winter. I was living in Scotland at the time. As I firmly brushed my legs and thighs, I could see visible puffs of dead cells released from my poor, pallid skin. Within days, I developed an itchy rash that happened to coincide with my cellulite-prone areas. I also developed the biggest canker sore I ever had. I usually only get canker sores if my body is under extreme stress and fatigue. For me, it was a sign that the dry brushing was indeed doing something.
Because of the dry brushing, I started paying close attention to how my legs were feeling. I soon noticed certain areas were more tender than others. For the first time, I realized that my cellulite actually hurt. How could I not have noticed it before? All those years of dealing with cellulite and I still wasn’t listening closely enough to what my body was trying to tell me.
Within weeks, I noticed a visible improvement in my cellulite, which my significant other confirmed.
The experience forced me to rethink my preconceptions about cellulite. If cellulite is genetic or normal or just plain fat, how could a few weeks of dry brushing have such a dramatic effect on my own skin?
My experience with dry brushing caused me to start questioning the conventional view of cellulite. I continued researching alternative approaches to healing cellulite and officially launched The Cellulite Investigation website several months later.
That was September 2009 and I’ve been seriously investigating cellulite ever since —a testament, I hope, to how passionately I believe in a holistic cure for the dreaded blight.
Since then, the CI community has worked together to uncover more evidence that healing cellulite is possible. The quest for a perky posterior is a popular discussion in gym locker rooms around swimsuit season. Cellulite is caused by the accumulation of fat deposits under the skin’s surface. The appearance of dimpled skin on the butt can make wearing a swimsuit an uncomfortable experience. Lotions, potions and gels claim to make cellulite less noticeable. However, the effects of topical solutions are only temporary. If you want a long-term solution for a firm backside, combine resistance and cardiovascular training with healthy nutrition.
Start your lower-body workout with a multi-joint exercise like squats. Multi-joint or compound exercises burn more fat because they engage more muscles. Squats work all of the major muscle groups in the lower body including the butt, thighs and calves. To perform squats, stand with feet shoulder width apart with dumbbells in each hand. Inhale and bend back from the hips as if you are about to sit in a chair. Lower yourself until your knees are at 90 degrees. Exhale and press yourself back up while driving your weight through the heels. Try four sets of 15 repetitions.
Perform walking lunges. Start by taking a large step forward into a split stance. Inhale and lower yourself until your front knee is 90 degrees. Exhale and press yourself back up while keeping your weight in your front heel. Bring your back leg forward so now it is in the front of your split stance. Repeat the movement and continue alternating legs. Perform four sets of 15 repetitions on each leg.
Try donkey kickbacks. Start on all fours with your back straight and abdominal muscles tight. Keeping your knee at 90 degrees, raise your leg and press your heel towards the ceiling. Lower your leg back to the starting position without allowing your knee to completely rest on the floor. Do 20 repetitions and switch legs. Complete four sets. To increase intensity, add an ankle weight.
Incorporate high-intensity interval training on your rest days. Adding steep hills and valleys to your cardiovascular workout burns significant amounts of fat in a short period of time. Try intervals on the Stepmill or Stairmaster. Start at a low speed for one minute, then double the speed for one minute. Alternate speeds for 30 minutes.
Eat healthy. Eliminate processed foods from your diet. Processed foods contain high levels of sodium and refined sugar which causes water retention. This can increase the dimpled look of cellulite.
